Leicester's council-run option: pickleball sits on the sports-hall booking list alongside badminton and table tennis, with courts available from 7am to 10pm on weekdays and until 5pm at weekends. It's a straightforward hall booking rather than a club night, so bring three friends and your own paddles, and you're away.

A village tennis club that put pickleball in its name and meant it: four dedicated pickleball courts sit alongside three for tennis. The social sessions run with Active Together at £2.50 a go, and your first one is free, which is about as low a barrier as the sport gets in the East Midlands.

A racket-sports barn in the countryside east of Leicester, playing pickleball on a Tiger Turf surface laid over sprung matting, which is noticeably kinder on knees than a sports-hall floor. Book a court on Playtomic and the balls come free with the hire; just remember the paddles.
